The Woodlands Secondary School is proud to be home to a plethora of sports teams, and therefore a large quantity of quality athletes. While The Woodlands is not a large school, and while it does not have million dollar, state-of-the-art equipment and training facilities, it has the one thing that is most necessary for any sports team, school or individual: passion.
This is a quality that is well-reflected by the school’s basketball program, which is showing its strength this year. First and foremost, the Senior Boys Basketball team put in everything they had in them as they pursued a 5-4-0 record in the regular season, and then went on to the ROPSSAA AA Playoff Finals. Judith Nyman Secondary School gave The Woodlands a run for their money in this game, but thanks to their determination to make something out of every possession and make every play they could, the boys were able to hold on for an incredible 51-50 win. A great season was capped off with a well-deserved win.
The Junior Boys had an even more impressive season than their senior counterparts. Not only did they finish 8-0-0 in the regular season, but they also outscored opponents by an overall score of 474-314. They scored 160 more points than their opponents in only 8 games! However, the playoffs would prove to be a difficult challenge for the team, as they were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the ROPSSAA championships, resulting in a playoff record of 1-1-0 for the season. No matter with the fact that the team did not go as far in the playoffs as they would have liked, the boys can be extremely proud of the way that they played, and especially the effort that they put in. It is without a doubt that the rest of the Woodlands community is proud of them.
Secondary students were not the only Woodlands students to succeed in basketball. Not only did both elementary teams play well and come up with satisfying finishes, but they also did it at home! The elementary boys team finished third in their very challenging tournament here at The Woodlands. The team battled hard in four tough games, and scored some very nice baskets, narrowly missing the finals. The boys strength and determination carried them to a good finish, and this seemed to invigorate the girls the next day. The team came out strong in their first game, and used this momentum to push themselves past three more opponents before eventually finishing on top. The girls won their tournament in style, competing in every game, and every play, along the way.
In the end, the Woodlands Secondary and Elementary students proved to the rest of Peel region that no matter the size or visible strength, and no matter the expectation of others, Woodlands basketball is a program to be reckoned with. The fact that Woodlands brought home two victories, one undefeated season and two other great playoff finishes shows that there is a lot to look forward to when it comes to The Woodlands basketball, and the rest of Woodlands sports. Based on some of the great performances, not to mention the statistics, that The Woodlands put up this year, this could be the beginning of something much bigger; a dynasty.
