Beginning in August, The Woodlands’s very own Justin Ko (Grade 11) will assume the position of Peel Student Trustee. Justin, who ran a campaign focused on mental health, fighting discrimination, and encouraging the discussion of current affairs within schools, won the election back in February and will represent all Peel District School Board (PDSB) students south of the 401 for the 2024-2025 school year.
“We serve in an advisory role,” he said. “There are several places where it’s possible to exert influence on policy, and in some cases even get new policies passed. For instance, we attend and speak at committee meetings.”
Justin has promised that the student body will get their voices heard, and has already determined his course of action to increase his impact. “My plan to mobilize support for [my ideas] is to set up petitions and other ways to show that students support these policies,” he explained. “That way, board members who have the ability to vote will understand what we’re calling for, and hopefully act based on what [the student body] wants.”
“I think Justin will do big things,” said Grade 11 student Aurick Yan. “I know him personally. He’s a great guy, and his platform spoke to me.”
According to the PDSB, student trustees represent students' voices and inform them about important decisions. They attend one meeting a week and receive $4,000 plus reimbursements for job-related expenses.
We wish Justin the best of luck as he heads off to the Central Board Office.
