Olivia Hendrikx and Shiao-Tang Guo October 2019
Through the months of September and October, the Be Like Terry crew at The Woodlands Secondary School worked diligently to ensure that their 15th year of donating towards the Terry Fox Foundation would be better than any previous year.
This year, aside from the annual Terry Fox barbeque hosted by Prefects and the Terry Fox walk, the Be Like Terry committee had many events planned to help fundraise. To kick things off, on September 20th, the Be Like Terry committee invited guest speaker Rebecca Babcock to talk about her experience with the Terry Fox Foundation. They then went on to do things such as selling Terry Fox T-shirts to students and teachers and hosting a charity basketball tournament where all profits went straight to the Terry Fox Foundation.
Rebecca Babcock, who is in fact a bio-science student at McGill University, highlighted perfectly the importance of the Terry Fox Foundation as well as how hard Terry worked for his dream of running across Canada to raise money for cancer research to come true. The significance of Terry’s actions and courage could not have been put under a better light. During the assembly, The Woodlands was presented with a banner commemorating 15 years of the school raising money for this particular cause. Babcock mentioned that this is an “amazing accomplishment” and that we should be very proud of it.
Mr. Ferrin - an elementary teacher at The Woodlands who is passionate about raising money for cancer research - as well as the Be Like Terry Leadership Crew, worked hard to organize The Woodlands’ first annual Terry Fox 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament on October 9th, shortly after the Terry Fox walk. Before and after his diagnosis, Terry was very involved in the game of basketball, even becoming somewhat of a star at wheelchair basketball. Having a basketball tournament was so meaningful because it not only raised money for a great cause, but also honoured Terry’s memory by playing a sport that he loved. This tournament was a huge success. Ten teams signed up for the tournament that invoked a tournament format with the top two teams from each bracket competing to become the champions and receiving a prize for their efforts. This tournament raised over $100 for the foundation and will become an integral part of Terry Fox week in years to come.
The total amount raised by The Woodlands is not official at this time, but it appears to be a significant amount of money. Everyone in the Be Like Terry Crew worked very hard to make all of the events possible, and they will continue to raise awareness and passion for this cause. They strive to reach their goal of beating the funds raised in 2018, but whether they can do this does not change the fact that their contribution is significant and will make a difference in the lives of people battling cancer all around the world.
