Welcome to a brief interview on The Woodlands Secondary School’s exciting recreation of the musical Newsies! This production is brought to life by the talented members of the Woodlands Drama Club (WDC), a vibrant community of creative students passionate about the arts. Whether you’re a seasoned performer or new to the stage, everyone is welcome to join and contribute to the magic. In fact, the WDC offers numerous opportunities throughout the school year for students to get involved in a variety of exciting events, so be sure not to miss out on the fun!
This year's Newsies production is shaping up to be one of the most exciting performances yet. Based on the actual events of the New York City Newsboy Strike in 1899, the musical is well-known for its upbeat choreography, memorable tunes, and motivational plot.
The Woodlands Woodstock interviewed Sabrina Cianciotta, a Grade 11 student, about her experience as part of the cast:
The Woodstock (W): What role do you play in the musical, and how did you prepare for it?
Sabrina (S): I play Mush Meyers, who’s always cracking jokes and is incredibly friendly. As for how I prepared for the role, I took a lot of inspiration from the Disney production of the film Newsies! I also put my own twist into the character by adding little aspects of my own and fun little spunky things I caught from experiences watching other musicals.
W: Can you describe the audition process and what it was like for you?
S: The audition process began with filling out a form, stating all my skills, acting experience, dancing experience, stuff like that! Once I was put into the room to audition for a role, I handed them my paper and chatted about the insight they had about me. Initially, I was nervous going in as it was my first time auditioning for a role, let alone being a part of a musical. However, it was a pleasant surprise. With the support of my friends and the awesome drama teachers, it was less nerve-wracking than expected.
W: What has been your favourite moment during rehearsals so far?
S: Without a doubt, my favorite aspect of the rehearsal process is the opportunity to connect and socialize with the new cast members. Furthermore, I enjoy nurturing my artistic skills by spending more time with individuals who share my passions. The whole cast and the friends that followed me along on this musical journey make rehearsal something I look forward to. I love the hustle, the good energy, the pressure, as well as the fun I have and experience.
W: What aspects of the musical you’re working on have inspired you the most?
S: The musical has inspired me to step out of my comfort zone and express myself more openly. I’ve always been afraid to be who I am outside of my bubble, just like many others are—scared of not fitting in. This musical helped introduce me to a group of individuals who share similar interests, and without this opportunity, I wouldn’t have found this awesome community. The musical has become my outlet, a place where I can sing, dance, laugh, and hang out with incredible people overall—a place that inspires me to be more confident.
W: How do you feel about performing in front of an audience?
S: Well, it’s definitely a little frightening performing in front of a large group of people, for sure. However, I find comfort in the fact that I’m not alone in feeling this way. Being surrounded by supportive, motivating individuals who are going through the same emotions helps me feel more at ease and reassured. It’s still a personal challenge, but I’m inspired to step out of my comfort zone and build my confidence. Yes, there are moments where it feels daunting, but the growth and the experience are absolutely worth it. I am so happy to be part of the Newsies cast, and I’m excited to keep working through these nerves and embracing the journey!

W: What would you say to anyone who is hesitant to join the school musical next year?
S: I would say absolutely audition! Even if you’re afraid you might not make the cut, go for it! Remember that it's more than just a show—it’ll help you connect with people who share the same passions, and find fun people in general. Plus, the memories you'll make and the confidence you'll gain will last far beyond the final curtain. Take the step—you won't regret it!
