Chatting with the Reps: Grade 11 Representative, Edward Liu

By Halyn Le and Anwesha Kaushal | November 19th, 2022

With the beginning of a new school year, the Student Activity Council (SAC) set up an election for students to choose a grade representative from a small group of candidates. The responsibilities of the grade representatives are to communicate with other students in their grade, gain feedback, and create events for the student body. For the 2022-2023 school year, the representative chosen for Grade 11 is Edward Liu. We had the opportunity of being able to interview Edward on Instagram.

We asked how he felt about becoming the grade representative. His response was that he feels good now that he’s able to share his ideas and actually make them a reality for all students at The Woodlands to experience.

“Why did you decide to run for grade rep?” we wondered. He said, “I saw that the past grade reps didn’t really do anything and decided to run so I could run some fun events.” He also stated his qualifications from his prior leadership experience, organizing events like Toronto Model United Nations, in his role as club president for Model United Nations.

When asked how he planned his speech, Edward said that he was aiming to make his speech funny. If his words weren’t able to catch the attention of the people in his grade, he would not have been able to be in the position he is today. It’s an important piece of advice, he explained, that future grade representatives should keep in mind when preparing for their speeches for their grade to hear about.

For any students who are planning to run for Grade Representative in the future, he offered additional advice. A funny speech is a good speech, but it also needs to have some authenticity and be informative. It's important to do so, he said, because while people might be amused by jokes, they care about what you have more to offer the grade.

We were curious about the one event Edward is most excited for. Edward said that he wants to set up a school sleepover for the students to enjoy! He also told us that an event he enjoyed from previous years was the Scavenger Hunt. This means we might be able to get another event similar to that. Cross your fingers Woods!

We also asked Edward about his plans for an event of his choosing, ‘The Winter Banquet.’ He stated that this would be a semi-formal event in an actual venue, with a three-course meal to go along with it. Some of the first steps towards making this happen, Edward explained, is to contact venues and to secure teacher sponsors. Other steps would be to work with The Prefects on having a charitable aspect so the money raised will go towards a good cause.

For part of his campaign, Edward made a short video and event roadmap - explaining why students should choose him as grade representative, and presented the events he’s planning in an entertaining manner. It was informative, and made the effort of him and his friends - who helped him film and edit - extremely worthwhile. Check it out if you haven't, the link is right below!

Another promotional piece for Edward's campaign.

Edward has a lot of plans for the 2022-2023 school year. Some of these include, “try[ing] to improve the public opinion of SAC, put [on] more events, public[ize] financial data from SAC,” as well as have more events throughout the school year for students to enjoy. He also mentioned that he wants to work with other clubs to make interesting events that will suit the diverse tastes of the student body.

If Grade 11 students need to reach out to Edward, they can use his email:

We are hoping to have a very exciting year with Edward Liu at the helm of Grade 11’s interests!
