On Saturday, November 25, 2023, the corridors of North Park Secondary School in Brampton bustled with high-school students in business suits. Students across the Peel region showcased their business acumen and strategic thinking for the DECA regional competition.
DECA is an international high-school business competition that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for their future careers. Students compete in various categories including business management, entrepreneurship, finance, hospitality, marketing, and personal financial literacy.
An impressive 172 Woodlands DECA members competed at the regional competition! There, they engaged in role-play activities. In role-plays, students are given business-related case studies for which they need to create a solution and presentation for a judge. This is all done within a very tight timeframe: 10 minutes preparation and 10 minutes presentation for Individual Series Events (done independently), and 30 minutes preparation and 15 minutes presentation for Team Decision-Making Events (done in partners). The multiple-choice exams were completed in school on October 31.
Our school's performance at DECA regionals was nothing short of spectacular. Amy Feng, Co-President of Woodlands DECA, shared her praise for our school’s DECA competitors: “This year's regionals was one of our most successful yet! We came back with 187 awards, which included a record 11 first-place winners. Our Principles Cluster did especially well, taking home the first or second place award in every single principles event.” Principles events are aimed at first-year DECA members. “Overall, the results were incredible and I can't wait to see us do it all again at provincials in February!”
DECA Provincials is scheduled for February 9-10, 2023 at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel. To stay updated on Woodlands DECA’s journey, follow @deca.woodlands on Instagram.
