The Woodlands Drama Club had their very first open stage of the 2021/22 school year on Thursday, October 28. Open stages are events held by Drama Club at the end of every month, where students can showcase their talents on a stage, in a safe, respectful, and encouraging environment.
Many executives and audience members were in the Halloween spirit that day, dressed up in fun costumes. Everyone was excited for the show to begin.
Sidd Goyal was first up, singing “This is the Moment '' from the musical Jekyll and Hyde. The lyrics are quite motivating and overall, the song is a great ballad. It is not easy to be the first to sign up and perform, so a round of applause goes out to Sidd for his brave enthusiasm.
This was followed by “Home” from the musical Beetlejuice, sung by Will James. Another wonderful song that brought out lots of emotions to everyone present.
Afterwards, we had a one-of-a-kind performance by James Comrie, whistling “The Witch Queen's Song”. Coming from someone who can’t whistle at all, it was a very exciting (and impressive) act to watch.
Next, Varsha Sangeeth did an amazing job singing “Prom Dress” by mxmtoons. As a personal fan of the song, I couldn’t help but sing along in my head!
Varsha was followed by a breathtaking opera performance by Olivia Socol singing “Time To Say Goodbye”. Every high note gave the whole audience goosebumps!
Annika Kohli sang “Drinking Games,” which has a really catchy tune. Annika had an amazing costume to go along with the performance as well!
Makayla Levesque performed afterwards, singing “Michael in the Bathroom” from the musical Be More Chill. The title might sound strange, but it sure has a nice tune and quite a lot of complex feelings all expressed nicely through the lyrics and the music.
Shriyans Dash, who had a humorous introduction, claiming to be Drama Club’s very own “pretty boy”, sang “Killer Queen '' by Queen. It was smooth, upbeat, and quite fitting for Drama Club’s Spooky Week celebrations.
Lastly, was a performance by Alex Lin singing “She Used To Be Mine” from the musical Waitress. It was a very powerful and remarkable performance, and acted as the perfect conclusion to the event.
Drama Club’s first Open Stage was a huge success! The fact that all of the performers sang (and even whistled!) while wearing masks was mind blowing. The Drama Club executives and any and all who contributed to this event did a fantastic job. What a great way to end the month of October and begin the next day’s exciting Halloween festivities. November’s Open Stage event is sure to be another phenomenal event so if you’re interested, come join Drama Club after school on Thursdays!
