After a year-long hiatus, our school’s Model United Nations has returned, bringing back a beloved club seeking students of all grades interested in politics, world affairs, history, or debate.
An information session was held on September 14, drawing a crowd that packed the room. Since then, a new executive team has been selected, and Ms. Popovic has been brought on as the faculty advisor. Students Sophie Zhang and Ahmad Abuzayed will serve as the club’s Co-Presidents, with Roger Wang as Vice-President, Edward Ji as Treasurer, Vibhav Badriraman as Events Coordinator, Joshua Zhuang as Secretary, and Andrew Dai and Sophie Shu as PR Managers.
Former Co-President Edward Liu has decided to step back, but will, however, continue in an external advisory capacity.
We spoke to Co-President Ahmad Abuzayed on his thoughts on the club’s return.
“I’m excited that we’re back,” he said. “I’m looking forward to going as a school to multiple conferences around the GTA. I’m also looking forward to our engaging club meetings every Thursday, where we’ll simulate our own mini-conferences and hold lively and fun debates. Our dedicated team is going to do all they can to make Model UN one of the best and most memorable clubs this year.”
After a challenging past year, we also caught up with PR Manager Andrew Dai on what the club has in store.
“Running this year’s Model UN will be a challenge. It’ll take a lot of work from both myself and [fellow PR Manager] Sophie Shu to revitalize the club. As of right now, we’re looking into future conferences to attend, as well as how we can make our meetings engaging.”
Model UN meetings are held every Thursday in the Lecture Hall after school, from 3 to 4 pm. For more information, they can be reached on Instagram @woodlands_mun.
