It is a crazy time for all high school students, but this is accelerated for students in a new school. So if you are new to The Woodlands, this one is for you.
The Woodlands Woodstock is the school newspaper at the Woodlands Secondary, and our job is to help build a strong community at the school by keeping the student body, staff and parents updated and connected. So we thought that a part of this was to give new students to The Woodlands - including both grade nine students and students from other schools - a warm welcome. Thus, we will be writing a variety of articles over the next couple of weeks with the hopes of making our school feel welcoming and familiar.
First things first, it is important for you to get to know a bit about The Woodlands as a school and as a community. The Woodlands is known for a great many things, including for its achievements in academics and extracurriculars, and for its diversity. The school is unique not only because it has elementary students as well as secondary, or because it has an Enhanced Learning Program, but because it has such a variety of classes and opportunities for every student. On top of the typical STEM classes, The Woods has a band repertoire class, a variety of phys. Ed., drama, art, technology and business classes, and so much more. There is a place, a club, an event, or a class for every single person in the school, regardless of where they come from, what they look like or what interests they have. The Woodlands is unique because each and every one of its students is unique, and that is something that is held dear by every student and staff member.
Possibly the best part of life at The Woods is being a part of the clubs and events that the school and its student body hold so dear. The school has a large variety of clubs which serve the same two primary purposes; to develop a strong community, and to help students develop their skills, knowledge and interests. The clubs at Woodlands - including SAC, WAA, Prefects and many more - play an important role in the team-building side of this. Events such as Ram’s Day, Pasta La Vista, and of course the renowned International Bazaar all bring together the very diverse body of students, staff and community together through fun activities, a variety of food and entertainment, and by raising money for important causes. Furthermore, these clubs and events also serve as an opportunity for students to build their skills and discover their interests. Clubs such as Prefects and Medlife build important skills in collaboration and leadership, MAC allows music students to put their passion for music to use, WAA allows students to find refuge in sports, and of course Writer’s Club and The Woodstock allow for opportunities to hone skills in writing and arts. By participating in clubs and events, students are guaranteed to learn something, including about themselves or about their peers.
Staying informed of the going-ons at the Woods is usually not too difficult, but without a doubt, the COVID-19 pandemic and the current model for learning are making it so. Thus we encourage you to do your best to keep up with the school and its clubs as best you can via social media. The most important source may be the “Club Club” announcements page on Facebook, where most clubs will post all of their information. On Instagram, meanwhile, The Peel District School Board account (@PDSB) is good for the most important news, while the school itself has accounts such as @guidewoodlands and @woodsclubs which are useful for keeping up with Woods-specific news and notes. In addition, most clubs have their own Instagram or Facebook pages on which they will post advertisements and information.
However, if you really want to get the inside scoop on all that is going on or on the amazing achievements of our school, its clubs and its students, we suggest you use us; the Woodlands Woodstock. Our website is updated as soon as articles are published, and will soon have resources such as a club calendar and links to important websites and accounts. We will also use our Facebook and Instagram accounts, as well as our new Discord server, to keep you updated on our work as well as on the most important news in regards to our school.
All in all, we wish you the absolute best in all of your endeavours as a student of The Woodlands, and we hope we can play a part in making your experience just a little bit better. We are always available for questions or comments, so please do not hesitate. Finally, stay tuned as we plan on releasing more content - including more of these Welcome To Woods articles - over the next couple of days, and will have our inaugural meeting of the 2020-21 school year fairly soon.
