The Student Activity Council (SAC) held an event exclusive for each grade throughout the first half of April. The events held included a treasure hunt for Grade Nines, a scavenger hunt for Grade 10s, a wellness morning for Grade 11s, and a week-long advice writing event for Grade 12s. The idea to do four different activities for each grade was something new, and overall, the general reaction from students has been very positive.
The Grade Nine Eggcellent Spring Hunt:
The Grade Nine Eggcellent Spring Hunt was a treasure hunt involving 5 hidden QR codes that revealed hints to the next unfound QR code when scanned. Each hint was a riddle which the contestants needed to solve. Seth Goyal, the Grade Nine Representative said, “Our event gave the Grade Nine students a chance to just have fun and de-stress.” He also found that the turnout was much better than expected and students definitely seemed like they were having fun. The chocolate offered as prizes really motivated his grade, and ignited their competitive spirit.
Grade 10 SAC-venger Hunt:
The SAC-venger Hunt functioned as a combination of an escape room and a scavenger hunt. According to Arya Vishnu, the Grade 10 Representative, “A lot of people had fun! They enjoyed the amount of planning that went into it and the clue at the end, which ended up being a locker whose code came from puzzle pieces you collected throughout.” A lot of the Grade 10 students who commented on this event agreed that it was enjoyable, and they found it interesting and challenging. Like the Grade Nine event, the turnout was even better than expected. Originally, six to seven teams were anticipated, but in the end, a total of nine teams showed up. With about five to six people per team, approximately 50 students in total participated.
Grade 11 Wellness Morning:
Grant Ren, the Grade 11 Representative said, “With midterms coming up, many of us can be extremely stressed and worn out by school, work, clubs, and all the other things in our lives, so we thought this event would allow people to de-stress and take their minds away from school for a while,” about why they chose to do a wellness morning as their grade-level event. The morning consisted of free food, fun music, and was an opportunity for students to take time off and enjoy breakfast with their friends. Grant found that the majority of students in his grade were really involved and excited. Overall, a lot of people had positive feedback for this relaxing, easygoing event.
Grade 12 "Woods Wisdom":
The Grade 12 event was very different from the rest in the sense that it was for a longer period of time. “Woods Wisdom” was a week-long event in which Seniors wrote notes of advice to their juniors, and stuck them on a large poster in the front foyer of the school. Andy Ganea, the Grade 12 Representative, has also planned to paint the poster, and keep it up on display for the rest of the year. He was happy to see that people were stopping every once in a while, and taking the time to “...read and think about the advice.” The students who participated seemed to enjoy it, as they came back multiple times to write new notes or to show others notes that they found memorable. The event was very successful, as shown by the incredible number of tips that were stuck to the poster by the end of the week.
The grade-level events that the SAC planned had an outstanding outcome, and the majority of participants said that they had a great experience. With the positive reception from this event, there may be strong support for future grade-level events at The Woods.
