High School for Dummies - No Dummies Here!

Sanesha Hajiyanee | May 28, 2021

"This year has been a crazy one, and it has been even more difficult for students to find different opportunities to help sculpt their futures. It’s hard to find help for all of these aspects of high school, but with the help of this information session, students were able to figure out some pieces of the puzzle when it comes to what is next."

On Friday, May 7, 2021, at 5:00 p.m. the Student Activity Council held their final event for this whirlwind of a year. The event was called “High School for Dummies”, where The Woodlands’ experienced seniors talked about topics such as extracurriculars, university applications, scholarships, and balancing social vs. study life. This event helped give students a guide on how to excel through high school.

There were eight amazing panelists, each having different perspectives of their high school careers which made them stand out.

Olivia Hendrix is mainly involved in the athletics at the Woodlands, such as track and field, and hockey. She is committed to Queens University for their Health Sciences program and is interested in playing sports during her post-secondary education.

Linda Zhao is the current co-president for DECA Woodlands, and she is also involved with robotics. She is planning on going into engineering science at the University of Toronto.

Sanna Tayabali is an executive of the Prefects club at the Woodlands, and she has also been involved in music, as well as a number of other things outside of school. She is interested in going into health or life sciences.

Jeshuran Wijayakumar has also been involved with the sports at the Woodlands, namely the basketball team. He is on the SAC as the Treasurer and he is interested in cars, so he’s planning on going into automotive engineering.

Victor Chao is a senior debater, having competed in all four years of high school. He has also done a lot of charity work for councils and non-profits. He is committed to the social science and Ivey AEO Business program at Western University.

Ethan Falby has also done a variety of sports during his high school career, including baseball, soccer, and hockey. He will be going to McMaster University for their Business program.

Julia Issa is the SAC grade 12 representative and is interested in going into health or life sciences.

Spencer Davey has done plenty of music-related things throughout his high school career, including being a part of both the concert and jazz bands. He’s planning on pursuing economics at Western Ivey.

The event started with the participants being entered into the meeting. There was an interesting choice of music with a mix of two songs which honestly did not mesh (although it did lighten the mood right off the bat.) As well, all the panelists had a background depicting lockers to demonstrate a school sort of setting. The hosts for this event were Danny Wang, who previously MC’d MEDLIFE and SAC’s respective online gaming tournaments, and SAC President Claire Zhang. The entire event was casual, as the intention was for it to be more of an information session for students to learn more about navigating the craziness that comes with being in high school.

Throughout the event, students were able to understand how they can make the most out of high school and enjoy this very short time. The seniors were asked a variety of questions from the students attending the session. Their honest answers enlightened younger students as to how they should spend their time in high school.

Each part of the session helped students learn more about their vague yet impending futures — helping to clear up the fog, if only a little bit.

This year has been a crazy one, and it has been even more difficult for students to find different opportunities to help sculpt their futures. It’s hard to find help for all of these aspects of high school, but with the help of this information session, students were able to figure out some pieces of the puzzle when it comes to what is next. Since, really, what is the point of doing all this research on everything related to high school, when you can’t help the next person when the research is no longer useful for you?

The High School for Dummies session held by the Student Activity Council was truly an eye-opener and an amazing way to pass the torch onto the next students. These seniors went through a lot this year, but hopefully it has prepared them for whatever life may throw at them. Good luck to the class of 2021, and to every other high school student who is going through this incredibly confusing and scary time. High school is filled with memories that students will keep forever, so make the most of it!
