Pop Culture Corner: Movies!

By Sanay Sood | May 5th, 2023

Grade 9 student Sophie Wu stated that Minions: Rise of Gru is one of her favourite movies. She explained that the movie is a prequel to the Despicable Me series, showcasing the life of Gru before the events of the trilogy. Sophia also praised the humour in the film, detailing that “these movies always make me laugh!!" Sophia further explained, "I think it's one of my favourite recent movies because I always loved the Despicable Me trilogy when I was younger and I love how this movie showed Gru's life before the series.”

Sophia recommended some other films to those who are interested in watching the movie, or would like to watch something similar. "I would recommend the Despicable Me trilogy as these movies show the character development of Gru! Also, any other Disney or Pixar movies are also great like Inside Out or Zootopia!"

Grade 10 student Layan Ramzi said that the Adam Project is her favourite movie. She described it as a movie that centres around time-travelling fighter pilot Adam Reed, who teams up with his 12-year-old self to save the future after crash-landing in 2022. Layan said the movie was enjoyable, with a good mix of humour and action. When asked for recommendations for similar movies, Layan suggested watching "Movies like Tomorrowland and Tomorrow War. Or if you want to watch a movie with Ryan Reynolds, Free Guy is a good option." These are also likely to appeal to those who enjoy a great mix of sci-fi and action.

Mario! is one of the best movies according to Grade 11 student Arnav Sethi. He said that the plot of this movie was similar to the classic Mario story, however, instead of Princess Peach being in trouble, Luigi needs help. He also said that there’s a bunch of small easter eggs and surprises for those who enjoy the Mario franchise. He also said that he expected it to be a childish movie but it blew him away with how funny and emotional it was. He said that he, “cried twice while watching it, and it left [him] extremely excited for the sequel.” Arnav also recommended watching other movies by the animation company, Illumination including Minions, The Secret Life of Pets, and Sing. He also said that people who are interested in the Mario universe would also enjoy the video games.

When asked about her favourite movie, Grade 12 student Charlotte Wilson chose Everything Everywhere All At Once, which follows a mother who gains interdimensional powers to save the universe while also reconciling with her family. She praised the film for its unique editing, sound, and costumes that add to its absurdity. Charlotte also noted that the film touches on emotional themes, such as a mother's anger towards her life and the strained relationship with her husband and daughter. "Everything Everywhere All At Once (EEAAO) is the wackiest, the editing, sound and costumes bring a unique craze to the film. The film goes into insane ideas. Making you laugh and cry, EEAAO is the best movie of 2022."

Charlotte suggested the movie Parasite by Bong Joon-Ho for anyone who is interested in similar movies. It deals with a family wrapped up in a class struggle and shows many emotional themes. She also suggested Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which uses animation to create an explosive style and features Spiderman meeting spider-people from different universes, similar to the use of multiple dimensions in EEAAO.
