Springfest: Sounds of A School’s Spirit

Updated: Nov 9, 2019

By Yaoxiang Song

Were you one of the people settled in a seat on the sunlit Thursday evening? Had your ears become friends with the compelling sounds of endeavours that our students displayed? Not only was it a spectacular showcase, but The Woodlands’ Springfest embodied the ideals of what it means to be a student, a teacher and even a community. On May 16th 2019, we had our senior, intermediate and junior bands, as well as the choirs, give off a performance that meant much more than just music.

What was at the center of it all? A shallow response would be: “the finesse in which the musicians performed”, but that static concept is dramatically overridden by the countless hours of hard work our musicians have contributed. For those who’re unfamiliar with our bands; ever since the fall season, both the intermediate and senior bands have been coming to school twice a week at 7am for rehearsals. The jazz band has been practicing every Wednesday (or Thursday, for seniors) after school. The Woodlands has had many outstanding achievements in the music department due to so many students (and parents) spending hours outside of school/their own time to make it an effort to better our bands and choirs.

As much as the students have worked, the guidance of teachers are also at play. People like Mrs. Koehnen and Mr. Mootrey made it apparent that music and the student life can be very closely intertwined. Many a times, Mrs.Koehnen mentioned: “school’s not just about studying, music shouldn’t be overlooked as it has improved many individual’s mental health. In the competitive setting of high school, it’s a source of inspiration, whether to build new friendships or to escape difficult times”. Mr.Mootrey has also displayed that music is a class full of enthusiasm, where the teacher and students work together to ameliorate, but also to enjoy and explore parts of themselves. Our teachers have given their time to provide students with nothing but whimsical memories to reminisce, in years to come. And that truly is the power that music holds in a person’s life.

Springfest was a great success, as mountains upon mountains of seats were filled with eager friends and families. It gave them a glimpse of something much more than just performances. It highlighted the works behind the scenes, how much team effort it took and the result… a community whose ambitious hearts leaped forward, to reap the applauses of many, at the cost of the dedication through countless hours.
